One matching set of funeral stationery
Funeral stationery is the printed material a family hands out or sends around a funeral. It looks best, and takes the least time, when every piece comes from the same details and the same design.
In the Print Studio you enter the details once. The name, dates, photo and service information then fill every item, in one of two designs (Classic or Modern) with a small icon of your choice: a tree, leaf, heart, dove, cross, or none. Change the photo or fix a date and every item updates.
Your work saves automatically to your free Lovekept account and in the browser, so you can close the page and come back to it. A small Lovekept mark sits in the footer of each item and can be switched off.
- Funeral program: a four-page folded program with the cover photo, order of service, life story, and a back page with a reading and a thank-you. For a less formal gathering, start from the celebration of life program template.
- Prayer cards: wallet-size keepsake cards with a photo on the front and a prayer or poem on the back, handed out at the service.
- Service cards: cards with a photo or symbol on the front and the service time, place and reception on the back, to hand out or mail before the day.
- Thank you cards: folded cards with a printed message inside, sent after the funeral to people who helped.
- Invitations: for a funeral, a memorial service or a celebration of life, useful when the gathering is planned for a later date.
- Obituary: a printable obituary page to display at the service, mail to relatives, or keep. If you still need the words, the free obituary writer helps you draft them.
Every memorial printable, its size, and how many fit on a sheet
Everything prints on standard US Letter paper (8.5 x 11 in). Smaller items print several to a sheet with cut marks.
| Item | Finished size | Per Letter sheet | Suggested paper |
|---|---|---|---|
| Funeral program | 5.5 x 8.5 in, folded, 4 pages | 1, printed on both sides | 24 to 32 lb premium paper or matte brochure paper |
| Prayer card | 2.5 x 4.25 in | 6, with cut marks | Cardstock |
| Service card | 4.25 x 5.5 in, front and back | 4, with cut marks | Cardstock |
| Thank you card | 4.25 x 5.5 in, folded (fits an A2 envelope) | 2 | Light cardstock that folds cleanly |
| Invitation | 5 x 7 in (fits an A7 envelope) | 2, with cut marks | Cardstock |
| Obituary | 8.5 x 11 in | 1 page per sheet | Copy paper or premium paper |
For a print shop, the "Exact size" option lays each page out at its finished size instead of several to a Letter sheet. Check the heaviest cardstock your printer accepts before buying a pack.
What to print for a funeral, how many, and by when
A checklist for the family. Most funerals are held 3 to 10 days after a death, so work back from the service date.
Not every family needs every item. A small graveside service may need only prayer cards. A large church funeral usually has programs and prayer cards, and thank you cards follow in the weeks after. Ask the funeral home what it already provides, such as a guest book or a printed folder, before you print your own.
- Invitations or announcements, as soon as the date is set. Most funerals are announced by phone, text, email and the obituary. Printed funeral and celebration of life invitations make most sense for a memorial service or celebration of life held weeks later: send them 2 to 4 weeks ahead if you can. Print one per household.
- Obituary, as soon as it is written. Newspapers set their own deadlines. Print a few copies from the obituary template to display at the service and to mail to relatives without internet access.
- Programs, with the text final 2 days before the service. Print one per expected guest plus 10 to 20 percent.
- Prayer cards, at the same time as the programs. Plan on about as many cards as programs; they are small keepsakes and people take one for someone who could not come.
- Thank you cards, after the funeral. Count everyone who sent flowers, food, a donation or a card, plus the pallbearers, officiant, musicians and anyone who helped. There is no strict deadline, and a late note is still welcome. Our funeral thank you card wording has messages to copy.
How to print funeral templates at home
A home inkjet or laser printer is enough for the whole set. Do these in order to avoid wasting cardstock.
Print a test on plain paper
Print one sheet of each item on copy paper. Fold or cut it and check the names, dates, times and spelling with a second person.
Set the print dialog
Choose US Letter and actual size or 100 percent, not "fit to page". For two-sided items, programs flip on the short edge and cards flip on the long edge.
Cut along the marks
Use a paper trimmer, or a metal ruler and a craft knife on a cutting mat. Cut a few sheets at a time.
Fold and crease
Fold programs and thank you cards with the printed cover facing out, then crease with a ruler. Score cardstock before folding so it does not crack.
Printing at home or at a print shop
Printing at home is fastest and costs only paper and ink, a few cents per prayer card. It suits small and medium services, and you can reprint at midnight if a date is wrong. The trade-offs are time (printing, cutting and folding 100 programs takes an evening) and paper weight, since many home printers struggle with heavy cardstock.
A print shop such as FedEx Office, Staples or a local printer is the better choice for large numbers, heavier paper, or color that must match across hundreds of copies. Save the PDF with the "Exact size" option and bring it on a USB drive or upload it. Many counters can print the same day, but call ahead to ask about folding and cutting, which can cost extra. At a print counter, 100 folded programs cost about $75 to $175 depending on the paper.
A QR code that links to an online memorial
Every item can carry an optional QR code. Guests scan it with a phone camera and land on the person's online memorial, where they can read the full obituary, see photos and leave a memory for the family. It turns a program that gets put in a drawer into a way back to the people who were there.
Creating a Lovekept memorial page is free. When you create your account, if you have added a name, a photo and a life story, you can publish a memorial page with the obituary in the same step, and the QR code opens it. If the family already has an obituary page at the funeral home, or any other link, you can paste that instead. Scan the code with your own phone on the test print before printing the full set.
Questions families ask
What do you print for a funeral?
Most families print a funeral program and prayer cards for the service, and thank you cards afterward. Service cards, with the time and place on the back, are handy to hand out or mail before the day. Some also print invitations, especially for a memorial service or celebration of life held later, and copies of the obituary to display or mail.
What is funeral stationery?
Funeral stationery is the printed material for a funeral: programs, prayer or memorial cards, thank you cards, invitations or announcements, and sometimes bookmarks and guest books. A matching set uses the same design and photo on every piece.
Are these funeral templates really free?
Yes. The funeral templates are free to use with a Lovekept account, and there is no watermark. A small Lovekept mark sits in the footer and can be switched off.
Can I print funeral programs at home?
Yes. A funeral program is one US Letter sheet printed on both sides and folded to 5.5 x 8.5 in, which any home printer can do. Print two-sided flipped on the short edge, then fold each sheet in half.
How many funeral programs should I print?
Print one per expected guest plus 10 to 20 percent. The extras cover late arrivals and family who want copies for people who could not come.
What paper should I use for memorial printables?
Use 24 to 32 lb premium paper or matte brochure paper for programs, and cardstock for prayer cards, thank you cards and invitations. Check the heaviest paper your printer accepts, and print one test sheet first.
Can I make all the funeral stationery match?
Yes. You enter the details once and choose one design, and the obituary page, program, prayer cards, service cards, thank you cards and invitation all use the same design, photo and wording.
Are the templates editable in Word or Google Docs?
No. These editable funeral templates work in your browser instead, so there is nothing to download or install. You can print directly or save a PDF from the print dialog on a computer, and any print shop accepts a PDF.
What is the difference between a prayer card and a Mass card?
A funeral prayer card is a keepsake handed out at the service, with a photo or image on the front and a prayer or poem on the back. A Mass card comes from a Catholic parish or religious order and says a Mass will be offered for the person who died; it is not something the family prints.
What can I write instead of "In Loving Memory"?
Common alternatives are "Celebrating the Life of", "A Life Well Lived", "Forever in Our Hearts" and "Always Remembered, Forever Loved". "Going Home" or "Homegoing Service" is often used for a church homegoing.
